The Benefits of Dancing, Free for Everyone

Full Circle Dance Company Artistic Director Donna L. Jacobs believes in the power of movement to enhance wellbeing and to create joy. That’s why, in addition to professional performances, Full Circle hosts free community workshops for people of all ages and abilities. The next free community workshop will be held January 19 at 2:00 pm at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts. The workshop is free and open to all, but registration is required.

“Every time we bring together people of different ages and backgrounds, magic happens,” Jacobs says. “Our professional dancers and our workshop guests work side by side, sharing ideas and creating choreography together. The results are always amazing and completely surprising. The cooperation of so many different people generates a totally unique creative experience every time.”

The January 19 workshop will be part of a groundbreaking collaboration between Full Circle Dance Company and Ballet Theatre of Maryland, the state’s leading professional ballet company. During the workshop, dancers from both companies will join members of the public in creative activities featuring live music, movement, conversation, and choreography activities.

“We cannot wait to join Full Circle in this free community artmaking experience,” says Ballet Theatre of Maryland Artistic Director Nicole Kelsch. “We know dance can lift the spirit, promote physical and mental health, and bring people together. We look forward to seeing what this creative experience yields.”

Sara Shalva, Chief Arts Officer of The Gordon Center, is also eagerly anticipating the Free Community Dance Workshop. “These two dance companies have consistently presented powerful, moving work on the stage at the Gordon Center. I am particularly interested in the collaboration, and in this opportunity to invite the whole community into the artistic experience. We're excited to offer a more intimate and participatory experience for whoever wants to come and learn with these accomplished artists.”

Shanna Daniels, who participated in a previous Full Circle workshop, relished the chance to be expressive in a supportive environment. She said, “This workshop brought me a sense of joy and an outlet I’d been searching for for a while now. I enjoyed myself more than expected and appreciated everyone’s welcoming aura.”
